So, is SEO just the text on my page and some HTML elements?
I’m sorry, I still don’t really understand. Do I need to do anything special to my page or edit my HTML for keywords or tags? Do keywords have anything to do with the meta tag? Don’t search engines eignore the meta tag? And what do tags have to do with it? (I have a blog, I thought I already have tags?) Thanks.
SEO has evolved. Basically it can be summed up to:
Building targeted pages and getting links.
People try and make it more complicated, but that is the grass roots level of SEO today.
That comes straight from Leslie Rohde and Jerry West, two of the most respected SEOs.
Content on your pages should be highly relevant to the keywords your targeting for optimzaiton.
As far as the tags, keywords in meta tags are always a good idea. Search Engines don’t pay a whole lot of attention to them, but they use the text in the meta title tage to display in the organic listing. So this data should not be stuffed with random words or contain broken sentance structure. It should be well written and content rich as it is essentially the "ad copy" for your organic listings.
aside from that SEO has a lot to do with your sites organization, its accesibility to SE spiders, and numerous other factors. LInk building is a usefull tool for example.
